Google Ads has two costs: what you pay Google for clicks, and what you pay someone to manage it. Here’s what both look like in South Africa in 2026, plus UK and US comparisons.

Cost one: your ad spend

This goes straight to Google, from your card, in your account. There’s no minimum, but there is a practical floor: spend too little and Google can’t learn, and you can’t tell what’s working.

For most small South African businesses I work with, a sensible starting budget is somewhere between R5 000 and R20 000 a month. Competitive markets (legal, finance, insurance) need more, because clicks cost more.

A quick way to size itTake what a new customer is worth to you. Work out how many you want a month. Then ask what you’d happily pay to win one. That number, times your target, is roughly your budget.

Cost two: management

UK and US comparison

Small-business management from freelancers and small agencies in the UK and US commonly starts around US$500 to US$1 500 a month (roughly £400 to £1 200). Senior one-to-one Google Ads coaching is often priced at US$300 to US$475 an hour. South African specialists with international agency experience can offer the same standard of work at a noticeably lower cost.

What you should get for your money

  • Conversion tracking that’s been checked, not assumed
  • Weekly attention: search terms, negatives, bids, budgets, ad tests
  • A monthly report you understand, with what happens next
  • Ownership of your account and data
  • No lock-in, or a very good reason for one

Red flags

  • The account is set up in the agency’s name, not yours
  • Long contracts before any results
  • Reports full of impressions and clicks, but no leads or sales
  • You can’t get a straight answer on who works on your account

Quick answers

How much does Google Ads cost per month in South Africa?

You pay two things: ad spend to Google (most small businesses start between R5 000 and R20 000 a month) and management, which is often a few thousand rand a month with a freelancer and R7 500 to R15 500 or more with an agency.

Is Google Ads worth it for a small business?

Usually, if people search for what you sell and your tracking is set up properly. Start with a focused search campaign, measure real enquiries or sales, and grow from there.
